'Movement Study 6 (Maxxinna)' is a performative installation which attempts to create a 360 degree movement in sculpture that shifts in real time through the elements and natural light, from midday to midnight, in Brunswick Park. Activating the gallery space through a live sound work, including adjusted local field recordings, this work will adapt The Bower to become a permeable vessel, in which internal and external borders are blurred, transformed and camouflaged, in order to open a space of interval.

 

'Movement Study 6 (Maxxinna)' takes inspiration from the Japanese word ‘ma’, which can be loosely translated as a gap, space or pause - the space between two structural parts. Using the internal and external settings offered by The Bower, the work places an emphasis on the interval as represented by the word ma. As such, ma is not something that is created by tangible compositional elements; it takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements.

 

The exhibition is accompanied by a new book, 'EROTIC MECHANICS-mappings', published by Publication Studio London, with texts by Emily LaBarge and a collection of textural scores and collages by the artist charting her recent work from 2015-2018. The exhibition 'Movement Study 6 (Maxxinna)' directly employs the collages and scores included in the publication as part of the archaeology and visual language of the live work at The Bower.

 

Mary Hurrell is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance, sound and sculpture.
